Outsiders Looking In: Lowriders, Culture, and Perspective
Outsiders Looking In is a project inspired by lowrider culture, specifically the experience of observing something deeply rooted in identity, community, and history from the outside.
Lowrider culture isn’t just about cars. It’s about storytelling, craftsmanship, pride, and legacy. Every detail, from the paint to the hydraulics, means something. It’s personal.
As someone stepping into that space as a designer, I had to ask: What does it mean to design around a culture you’re not fully inside of? This project explores that question. It focuses on the perspective of being close enough to appreciate the beauty and depth of the culture, while still recognizing the boundaries of not fully belonging to it. There’s a balance between inspiration and respect, between showcasing and oversimplifying.
Visually, the direction pulls from classic lowrider elements like chrome, bold typography, layered textures, and movement. At the same time, it stays intentional about not reducing the culture to just aesthetics.
This isn’t about recreating lowrider culture. It’s about acknowledging it, learning from it, and designing with awareness.
Outsiders Looking In is both a design exploration and a personal reflection on perspective, influence, and what it means to create while still being in the process of understanding.
